"Recent Advancements in Dynamic Control of Metamaterials".

Περίληψη ομιλίας

Metamaterials are artificial photonic structures made from a periodic arrangement of basic constituent units called meta-atoms or meta-molecules, offering a remarkable capability to manipulate optical responses and tailor light-matter interaction. Recently, the introduction of temporal inhomogeneity in metamaterials has opened up new avenues for controlling their effective properties in four dimensions. This added flexibility significantly broadens the scope for adjusting their effective responses, providing a strong incentive for further investigation. This seminar will cover two pivotal studies: first, we will present our approach for modeling electromagnetic wave scattering from space-time-periodic structures using the Photonic Layer Multiple Scattering method; second, we will explore complex-frequency excitations to manipulate the directional scattering of light in magneto-optical structures. We will illustrate strategies to break optical reciprocity without the need for magnetic materials and generate higher-harmonic frequencies using linear materials. Moreover, we will introduce the concept of the oblique Kerker effect and anisotropic virtual gain.
